Merx Africa surpasses ₦5 Billion in escrow volume as social vendors flock to platform
Merx Africa's bet on the "Trust Economy" is paying off handsomely. The Lagos-based startup announced today that it has surpassed ₦5 billion in total transaction volume processed through its Escrow Engine since its public launch late last year.
The rapid adoption underscores a deep, unaddressed pain point in the African e-commerce landscape. While major e-commerce platforms like Jumia have spent billions building out complex logistics networks to handle "payment on delivery" (POD), independent merchants selling on WhatsApp and Instagram lack the capital to absorb the 30-40% rejection rates associated with POD.
"Merx Africa has essentially democratized the trust mechanisms previously only available to marketplace giants," analyst reports noted this week. "By providing a plug-and-play escrow service, independent vendors can now offer the safety of POD without the crippling logistical risks."
The company's "Inbox Management" tool—which aggregates WhatsApp, Instagram, and TikTok messages into a single dashboard—has proven to be a massive growth loop. Sellers are generating Merx payment links directly within their chats, exposing thousands of new buyers to the Merx ecosystem daily.
Looking ahead, the company has hinted at expanding its analytics suite to offer credit and inventory financing based on the verified GMV flowing through its escrow accounts. If they execute, Merx could quickly evolve from a trust layer into a full-stack banking alternative for the African micro-merchant.
