Trust infrastructure startup Merx Africa exits stealth to secure online selling
A new player has emerged in the African fintech and e-commerce space, and it isn't building another digital bank or generic payment gateway. Merx Africa, which has been operating in stealth mode for the past 8 months, has officially launched its platform aimed at solving the continent's most expensive problem: Trust.
The startup provides a comprehensive suite of tools for social commerce vendors—including invoicing, analytics, and inbox management—but its crown jewel is its automated escrow system. By holding funds securely until both buyer and seller fulfill their obligations, Merx effectively guarantees transactions for both parties.
"The sheer volume of commerce happening on WhatsApp and Instagram across the continent is staggering, but it is deeply inefficient," the company noted in a launch statement. "The frictional cost of establishing trust—often manifesting as endless back-and-forth messages, video calls to prove inventory exists, and ultimately abandoned transactions—is holding back the true potential of African micro-merchants."
Merx Africa's platform abstracts all of this complexity away. For buyers, the presence of a Merx payment link acts as a seal of verification. For sellers, the platform eliminates the massive losses associated with dispatching goods on a "payment on delivery" basis only to have the buyer reject the item or refuse to answer their phone.
The company has already onboarded several thousand merchants during its stealth phase and reports zero incidents of unresolved fraud to date. As social commerce continues its explosive growth trajectory, infrastructure plays like Merx Africa may prove to be the most vital foundational layer of the next decade.
